Age-related occurrence of simple renal cysts studied by ultrasonography

Abstract: Three hundred forty-eight outpatients without evidence of renal disease were examined by ultrasound. Their ages ranged from 18 to 83 years. Unexpected renal cysts of more than 1 cm were found in 47 patients (13.5%). No cysts were demonstrated in patients less than 23 years old; thereafter the number of patients with cysts increased significantly with age. The cyst diameter also tended to increase with age, but the correlation with age was not significant. There was no statistical difference of cyst occurrence … Show more

“…The prevalence of cysts was similar to that reported in prior CT surveys [2,4] and the strong association with age is consistent with previous reports [1][2][3][4][5]. The predilection for males was not as strong but is also consistent with previous reports [1,[3][4][5]. The novel finding in this study is the reduced renal function in patients with simple cysts.…”

“…They are rarely observed before age 30 years and their incidence increases dramatically after age 50 years [1][2][3][4][5]. Cysts are also more common in males [1,[3][4][5]. However, little else is known about sporadic cysts and, unless they exhibit some anatomic complexity, they are generally ignored and considered to have no clinical significance.…”

“…Evidence in favour of this is the age dependency observed in this and other studies (Laucks et al, 1981;Yamagishi et al, 1988;McHugh et al, 1991). Furthermore, microdissection has demonstrated an increasing number of diverticula on the distal tubule with age (Beart & Steg, 1977a).…”

“…Simple renal cysts are very rare before age 40, but become increasingly common with growing age (Laucks et al, 1981;Yamagishi et al, 1988;McHugh et al, 1991). Arterial blood pressure (BP) also increases with age, and there is some evidence, mostly derived from case reports (Luscher et al, 1986), of a causal relationship between simple renal cysts and hypertension.…”
