“…Lopez et al ( 2006 ) showed that the microbial quality of treated effl uents in membrane fi ltration was higher than that of local well-water used for irrigation; after simplifi ed treatment, in order to save the agronomic potential of organic matter and nutrients present in urban wastewater, olive trees were irrigated with effl uents produced by skipping biological processes and this resulted in a yield increase of 50 % in storage reservoirs capacity; TSS, BOD 5 , COD and nutrients concentrations achieved the in-force Italian limits for wastewater agricultural reuse, and in constructed wetlands the values of TSS, BOD 5 , COD, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removals were 85 %, 65 %, 75 %, 42 % and 32 %, respectively. In Europe, Bixio et al ( 2006 ) inferred that technological innovation and the establishment of a best practice framework would help, but even more, a change was needed in the underlying stakeholders' perception of the water cycle.…”
