“…Moreover, this region lies within the range of wild grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. subsp. This area supports a traditional agriculture (Hmimsa and Ater 2008), mainly based on food-producing crops; however, an old tradition of grapevine cultivation also exists. In addition to the earliest events of grapevine introduction into Maghreb by Phoenicians (Ben Salem-Fnayou 2006), there has been an important exchange of grapevines cultivars within this region.…”

“…The study sites of Bellota and Agda are located on the continental slope of the periphery of the Rif chain, in preRif folds with a sub-humid climate and characterised by Quercus suber L. woodland (Benabid 1982). Subsistence farming of a traditional mountain type is practised across the sites of the northern zone (Hmimsa and Ater 2008). Tillage was generally by donkey-, mule-or cattle-drawn plough (wooden or metal charrue) (Table 2).…”

“…Fig intraspecific diversity has been maintained to a large extent despite the negative effects of the expansion of cannabis cultivation on agrodiversity in the Rif (Hmimsa 2009). The high level of intraspecific diversity, the complexity of the naming system of fig varieties and classification system, associated with high sociocultural and economic values contrasts with a much lower level of olive diversity (only seven local varieties, Hmimsa and Ater 2008) in the same agroecosystems in the Rif. This low level of diversity, associated with the existence of one clone, the Picholine marocaine, which is dominant throughout Morocco (Khadari et al 2008b), may be related to government agricultural policies, at least since the French protectorate period ) (Aumeeruddy-Thomas unpublished data), which have favored olive plantations and olive oil production for export.…”
