Alginate-based aerogels as wound dressings for efficient bacterial capture and enhanced antibacterial photodynamic therapy

Abstract: The development of novel wound dressings, such as aerogels, with rapid hemostasis and bactericidal capacities for pre-hospital care is necessary. To prevent the occurrence of bacterial resistance, antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) with broad-spectrum antibacterial ability and negligible bacterial resistance has been intensively studied. However, photosensitizers often suffer from poor water solubility, short singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) half-life and restricted… Show more

“…It can be seen that the O–H stretching vibration peak of SA has been altered from 3000 to 3600 cm −1 to a broad peak of 2000–3600 cm −1 , which was probably due to the grafting of PBA, greatly increasing the hydrogen bonds in the system. The characteristic peaks of PBA were all reflected in the spectrum, in which the absorption peak at 1606 cm −1 was caused by benzene ring's skeleton vibration [ 43 ], while the tensile vibration peak of B–O at 1352 cm −1 [ 44 ] and the tensile vibration of C–N at 1407 cm −1 represented the formation of the amide bond [ 45 , 46 ]. All the results demonstrate the successful grafting of PBA.…”

“…Hemolysis, MTT assays, and live/dead cell staining were performed to assess the biocompatibility of SA@TPAPP@PBA aerogel. Notably, all three types of aerogels showed negligible cytotoxicity [46].…”

“…Photodynamic and photothermal are also widely used in wound antibacterial applications by combining with hydrogels. 88 , 89 Effective antibacterial hydrogels can help to heal patients’ wounds and reduce the pain from chronic diabetic wounds as well as reduce the healthcare burden.…”
