Alpha-Fetoprotein Following Neonatal Resection of Sacrococcygeal Teratoma

Abstract: The sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is the most frequent tumor in the neonatal period. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels fall after tumoral resection, although the time required for level normalization has not been established. The authors evaluate the time required for AFP levels to reach normal levels in 6 infants with prenatal diagnosis of SCT who underwent surgery for resection. The mean time required for AFP level normalization was 9 months. All patients were alive and 1 had neurogenic bladder. AFP has a progr… Show more

“…The cell cycle of the two-cell embryos in the mouse has duration of 20–26 h with G 1 and S phases that last ∼1–2 and 6–7 h; these phases are followed by an extended G 2 phase (12–15 h) and M (mitosis) phase of 1–2 h ( 49 ). Many plant extracts have been used as a source of medicinal agents to cure urinary tract infections, cervicitis vaginitis, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory diseases, cutaneous problems, helmintic infections, parasitic protozoan diseases, and antitumor and antimicrobial ( 17 , 50 – 53 ). The results of this investigation may improve our understanding in usage of this plant as an alternative anticancer therapy.…”

“…In addition to its prognostic value, the AFP assay is an excellent means for postoperative follow-up; as it falls after tumor resection, and rises in case of recurrence or metastases. According to some studies, normalization of AFP after tumor resection occurs between 6 and 12 months, however, its recommended dosage every 3 to 6 months for 3 years after surgery [28,31]. the clinic and complementary examinations allowed us to classify our patient into the SCT type II of Altman's classification.…”

“…The normal AFP level at birth can be 100,000 ng / ml. The interpretation of the AFP rate is only possible thanks to the Tsuchida chart [28,29]. This marker is considered as an important key for the clinical differentiation between benign and malignant teratomas, as well as for evaluating the efficacy of treatment [30].…”

“…Interestingly, AFP values were far higher in patients with metastatic disease than in the one with IVC. We might speculate that such a difference may be due to AFP production from metastatic cells retaining their fetal potential [11].…”
