Clitoria ternatea L. as a Potential High Quality Forage Legume

Abstract: Samples of Clitoria ternatea L. (Cunhã) were harvested at 35, 50, 70, and 90 d after a uniformity harvest in a field study designed as a completely randomized design with a total of 18 experimental plots. The dry matter yield of the whole plant was separated quantitatively into leaves, stems, and pods at each harvesting age. Chemical analyses and in vitro gas production kinetics were performed to assess the quality of the plant parts. Yields, chemical composition, and estimates of gas production parameters wer… Show more

“…In addition, the urea treatments increase the nitrogen offered to the microorganisms, through the hydrolysis of urea, serving as a source of nonprotein nitrogen for the fermentation of fiber (GARCÍA-MARTÍNEZ et al, 2009). While reductions in the lag time (L), indicate a greater efficiency in the fermentative activity of the microorganisms, since they are affected by the presence of inhibitory substances to ruminal fermentation such as lignin (ABREU et al, 2014).…”

“…The culture medium was obtained according to the methodology described by Hall and Mertens (2008), with the ruminal inoculum being obtained from three sheep rumen fistulated, fed once a day with corn silage and soybean meal. The time profiles of the cumulative gas production were obtained using a non-automated device, where the gas pressure was obtained by manometric readings and the volume measured by means of a graduated pipette (ABREU et al, 2014). The pressure and volume measurements were performed at the times 0, 2, 4,6,8,10,12,16,20,30,36,48,72 and 96 hours of incubation.…”

“…These models are based on the evaluated substrate and on the ruminal digestion kinetics to estimate the availability of nutrients (carbohydrates and proteins) for the microbial growth (Abreu et al, 2014). The optimization of diets for ruminants has been widely investigated, especially concerning their ability to ingest and consume fiber (Vieira et al, 2008a;Jardim et al, 2013).…”

“…Dry matter (DM), ash, and ether extract were determined by using the methodology described by Silva & Queiroz (2002). The in vitro digestibility was determined following all recommendations of Abreu et al (2014). Pressure and volume of gas were measured at 1, 2, 3,6,8,10,12,16,20,24,30,36,48,72, and 96 h of post-incubation.…”
