An Eifelian U-Pb zircon date for the Enagh Tuff Bed from the Old Red Sandstone of the Munster Basin in NW Iveragh, SW Ireland

Abstract: The first geochronological data from the Munster Basin (SW Ireland) contradict the accepted biostratigraphical maximum age (late Givetian-early Frasnian) of the oldest alluvium in the basin depocentre. Magmatic zircons from the Enagh Tuff Bed, a sub-plinian air-fall tuff within fluviatile Old Red Sandstone of NW Iveragh, give a Pb/Pb isotope age of 384.9 0.7 Ma. This confirms Middle Devonian (probably Eifelian) sedimentation and allows possible Early Devonian basin initiation. Associated second-cycle gravels s… Show more

“…4). Disparity decreased more markedly until approximately the time of the earliest described tetrapod trackways [e.g., the Zachełmie tracks from the Middle Devonian ( 43 ), similar in timing to other records predating substantial body fossils ( 44 , 45 )] and then stabilized. This pattern, although based on a modest sample size as mandated by the existing fossil record, is congruent with an evolutionary stabilization of the disparity of appendicular anatomical organization near the origin of tetrapods.…”

“…The Irish trackways are not younger than 385 myr based on the U‐Pb zircon dating of the Enagh Tuff Bed which is located 352 m above the bed correlatable with the trackways (Williams et al . ). According to the GTS 2012, their age may now be shifted from the Frasnian (Stössel ) to a middle part of the Givetian (Fig.…”

“…During the early phase of development of the SMB, Old Red Sandstone sedimentation continued and, like the fluvial sediments of the earlier Munster Basin (Givetian or Frasnian to Strunian age), was derived from the north and west (Graham et al. , 1983, 1992; MacCarthy, 1990; Sadler & Kelly, 1993; James & Graham, 1995; Kelly & Sadler, 1995; Williams et al. , 1997, 2000).…”
