An experimental investigation on the requirement of roof height and sill width for car ingress and egress

Abstract: The present study experimentally investigated the effects of roof height and sill width on car ingress and egress movements. Short females required almost the same roof height as tall males due to smaller space around the seat. The results would help to optimise car dimensions for improving car accessibility.

“…Indeed, tall participants entering a medium-sized car flex the head on the trunk while short participants perform an extension [15]. This flexion movement is also noticed when tall participants exit the vehicle [34]. This motor strategy was confirmed by the biomechanical analysis of joint angles in the current study (Figure 4).…”

“…This increased amplitude of the neck joint angle has subsequently influenced the REBA score of G95 participants. This motor behavior might be due to the fact that tall participants have a larger space available between the seat and the steering wheel [17,34].…”

“…Most research was conducted in France (7 of 9), with others taking place in Germany and the United States. Several studies assessed kinematics using the Vicon system in conjunction with force plates [1,[7][8][9]16,19,22] and an H-point machine [1,[7][8][9]16]. Other studies imported postures into RAMSIS to develop aspects of a digital mockup [7,16].…”

“…En outre, plusieurs dimensions du cockpit sont reconnues pour avoir des incidences sur le risque postural ainsi que sur le confort subjectif ressenti lors du mouvement d'entrée et de sortie d'un véhicule [6,5]. La première de ces dimensions concerne la hauteur d'assise.…”
