An Image Processing Method for Extraction of the Stress Wave Reflection Period

Abstract: The stress wave reflection method is widely used in the detection of structure size and integrity due to its advantages of low environmental impact and convenience. The detection accuracy depends on the accurate extraction of the stress wave reflection period. The traditional peak–peak method (PPM) measures the time interval between the first two peaks of the reflected waves to extract the reflection period. However, human interpretation is not avoidable for identifying the weak peak due to signal energy leaks… Show more

“…Relying on piezoelectric sensors, Li et al [ 33 ] proposed a method to quantitatively evaluate the debonding of concrete-filled steel tube members. Gong et al [ 34 ] proposed an automatic extraction algorithm for the stress wave reflection period based on image processing. In another work, Hei et al [ 35 ] presented a method to quantitatively evaluate the bolt connection state by using a single piezoelectric ceramic transducer and a wake wave.…”

“…In recent years, Structural health monitoring (SHM) methods have been increasingly used in civil engineering [21,22]. The definition of SHM is to monitor the status of the tested structure by using damage free monitoring technology [23,24] and data analysis means including a variety of digital signal processing [25,26]. It mainly aims to identify whether there is damage in the structure [27], determine the specific damage location [28], quantify the degree of structural damage, and evaluate the remaining service life of the structure [29].…”

“…For obtaining frequency features to achieve high accuracy in damage identification, time-frequency technologies have been widely applied in radar signal recognition (Ahmad et al, 2020), equipment fault detection (Ulloa and Barbieri, 2018), and nondestructive testing (Obuchowski et al, 2014;Dorafshan and Azari, 2020;Li et al, 2020). Gong et al (Gong et al, 2020) proposed an algorithm for the automatic extraction of the stress wave reflection period based on image processing to measure the different lengths of buried metal piles in soil. Le et al (Li et al, 2020) adopted time-frequency analysis to extract the instantaneous frequency of a vehicle-bridge interaction system and evaluated the bridge' state.…”
