An investigation of a novel behavioural test to assess pain in piglets following castration

Abstract: A novel behavioural test using a handling chute was evaluated over two trials as an objective method to assess pain in piglets following castration. Piglet (n = 98) navigation time (NT) through a handling chute was measured at specific time points up to 24 h post treatment. In trial 1, comparing the NT of castrates (C) and sham castrates (SC), C piglets had a longer NT than SC at 0 and 15 min post treatment (P < 0.05), with no differences thereafter. In trial 2, the effect of an analgesic to control postoperat… Show more

“…Other behavioral alterations have been measured before and after painful events (64) and compared with control or sham animals (66, 70, 71, 73, 9194, 103105) from which analgesics were given or withheld (71, 72, 7577, 79, 92, 103, 105, 106). Avoiding social contact with littermates has been recorded after tail docking (72) and castration (71, 93).…”

“…Additional behavioral variables measured in relation to pain include aggression (70, 71, 77), playing, nosing, chewing and licking (64, 70, 75, 77, 93, 111), general activity (70, 72, 75, 76, 79, 91, 93, 94, 105, 106, 110), and location within the pen (76, 92, 103, 106). Painful procedures appear to disturb in particular interactive behaviors (chew, lick, play, nose, and aggression) (70, 77, 93, 104).…”
