“…Consistent with other studies ( Amerio et al, 2020 ; Kan et al, 2022 ; Peters & Halleran, 2021 ; Sarkar et al, 2021 ), perceptions of indoor space and layout and communal area quality were also independently associated with wellbeing, and together highlight the importance of both private and semi-private spaces. Internal private space typically impacts wellbeing via the mechanism of crowding ( Evans et al, 1996 ; Guite et al, 2006 ), but quality outdoor communal areas (i.e., well-maintained areas with greenery and sufficient space and facilities to enable flexible use) may help to minimise crowding by providing respite from the indoor environment, exposure to nature, and the opportunity to interact with neighbours ( Bandara et al, 2020 ) Alarmingly, internal apartment space has been reducing – recent data reveals the average floor area of Australian apartments shrunk by almost 15% over the past 15 years (i.e., 2005–2020), with Sydney decreases worse than other cities at 19% ( ABS, 2020 ). In part, this may be symptomatic of the increased supply of one and two-bedroom apartments to cater to the investment market ( City of Melbourne, 2013 ), however in the context of COVID lockdowns and increased time at home, the apparent falls in apartment size are concerning ( D'Alessandro et al, 2020 ; Peters & Halleran, 2021 ).…”

“…As mentioned in the work of Bandara and associates (2020), the main public spaces of high-rise residential buildings can be grouped into playing grounds, sports grounds such as swimming pools, tennis courts, gymnasiums and leisure centres. Accordingly, in this study, consumer preference for interior public spaces of high-rise apartments was measured by asking respondents about the importance they place on these three types of interior public spaces when making high-rise apartment purchase decisions (Bandara et al , 2020). In fact, the three types are the most popular and present in most of high-rise residential buildings in Vietnam although the architectural designs of public spaces may be different to fit with various living standards of apartment market segmentations.…”

“…While high-rise buildings are effective in dealing with the issue of housing land scarcity, it is also criticized by scholars for adverse influences on residents' satisfaction, their social life and other related physiological and social issues (Gifford, 2007). Interior public space or communal space features of high-rise residential buildings such as swimming pool, playground, gymnasium and so on therefore have become the most important platforms for residents' social activities and interactions (Bandara et al, 2020;Ford et al, 2000). Accordingly, interior public space is one of the most important criteria in designing residential buildings in modern society because social activities are considered the soul of the buildings (Mahdavinejad et al, 2012).…”

“…Due to the lack of suitable designing criteria towards promoting SI in CC, current study investigates components of the social (interpersonal trust, correlation, cooperation, participation), [44][45][46] structural (space size, colours, form, material, enclosure, furniture choice), 21,[47][48][49][50][51][52][53] behavioural (accessibility, pause points, freedom, various functions, privacy), 21,[54][55][56][57][58] perceptional (visibility, legibility, coherence, tranquillity, personal distance, recollection) 50,59-61 and environmental (space illumination, cooling and heating system, olfaction, sound insulation) [62][63][64][65] aspects as important factors in CC, and their influence on a place's sociability (attraction, intimacy, greeting, redesign, spending more time) 21,66,67 in order to recognize the influential factors of women's SI enhancement in CC (Figure 1).…”

“…Since SI take place in low levels among different generations and people who tend to experience different kinds of communications, 20 public spaces as a proper space for attendance of different generations can provide a suitable background for SI. 21 Attaining cohesive and sustainable social relationship requires human knowledge development in different kinds of socializing factors.…”
