By comparing different settlement forecast methods, eight methods were selected considering the creep of marine soft soils in this case study, including the Hyperbolic Method (HM), Exponential Curve Method (ECM), Pearl Growth Curve Modeling (PGCM), Gompertz Growth Curve Modeling (GGCM), Grey (1, 1) Model (GM), Grey Verhulst Model (GVM), Back Propagation of Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) with Levenberg–Marquardt Algorithm (BPLM), and BPANN with Gradient Descent of Momentum and Adaptive Learning Rate (BPGD). Taking Lingni Seawall soil ground improved with prefabricated vertical drain-assisted staged riprap filling as an example, forecasts of the short-term, medium-term, long-term, and final settlements at different locations of the soft ground were performed with the eight selected methods. The forecasting values were compared with each other and with the monitored data. When relative errors were between 0 and −1%, both the forecasting accuracy and engineering safety were appropriate and reliable. It was concluded that the appropriate forecast methods were different not only due to the time periods during the settlement process, but also the locations of soft ground. Among these methods, only BPGD was appropriate for all the time periods and locations, such as at the edge of the berm, and at the center of the berm and embankment.

Concrete expanded-plate piles have significant advantages in the bearing capacity, settlement, and construction period. The added bearing expanded plate is the key reason for their many advantages; moreover, the slope angle (α angle: the maximum diameter of the bearing expanded plate and the angle formed on the plate) of the bearing expanded plate is the main factor to control the longitudinal symmetry. However, the concrete expanded-plate piles in practical engineering do not exist in a rigid body state, and elastic deformation will occur under variable engineering conditions. In addition, the research in this paper mainly focuses on a flexible concrete expanded-plate pile (F-CEP pile). The flexible pile mentioned in this paper refers to the bending deformation of the pile body under horizontal load, which produces large pile top displacement. This study uses the two methods of small-scale half-plane pile model test and finite element simulation analysis of ANSYS, after referring to the equipotential pile test at the actual site. In this paper, the variation law of the displacement curve and the failure law of the soil around the pile under the horizontal force when the α angle changes are analyzed, and the calculation model of the bearing capacity of F-CEP pile under the α angle change is put forward. This research aims to verify the reliability of existing research and provides strong support for the application, promotion, design, and research of F-CEP piles in construction engineering.

Determining the ultimate bearing capacity of pile is important for reasonable design of the pile. In this paper, a cusp catastrophe theory-based method was proposed for assessing the ultimate bearing capacity of static loading pile. Firstly, a three-parameter quartic polynomial in accordance with the standard form of cusp catastrophe model is proposed and used to fit the experimentally obtained Q–S curve. The parameters which allow the polynomial to produce best fitting to the Q–S curve are taken to identify the stability of the pile following a simple procedure. Then, the proposed method was verified against 10 Q–S curves obtained from field tests at Jinqiao-Meiya and Jinqiao-Chunyu areas of Shanghai. Results show that the ultimate bearing capacities of the piles identified by the proposed method were comparable to those identified by the JGJ 106-2014 standard method. Finally, it is found that the stability of the pile identified by the proposed method and the mechanical state of the pile identified by the Golden Section approach were correlated closely.
