An overview of IPA Braille: An updated tactile representation of the International Phonetic Alphabet

Abstract: This article provides an overview of IPA Braille, revised and updated by Englebretson (2008) under the auspices of the International Council on English Braille (ICEB). After a brief introduction to braille as a writing system and a review of the disparate braille notations formerly used for phonetics, the author discusses the need for a single, up-todate, linguistically-informed braille notation for the IPA. The author then outlines the rationale and procedures used in developing IPA Braille, and presents an… Show more

“…Even though Braille music is a cultural tool (Wertsch, 1997) that supports the MVI, it does not seem to be considered spontaneous and convenient. On its face, there is nothing inherently false about this statement—however, it is woefully incomplete and print centric.…”

“…There are over 130 languages in the world with braille systems (World Braille Usage, 2013), and braille is also used to notate the International Phonetic alphabet (Englebretson, 2009), mathematics, chemistry, music, and for hobbies such as chess and knitting/crocheting.…”
