An overview of organic molecule soft ionization using vacuum ultraviolet laser radiation

Abstract: The utility of coherent vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) single-photon ionization (SPI) combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) for organic molecule detection by parent mass is explored in this short review. Nonresonant tripling in phase-matched Xe-Ar gas mixtures was used to generate photons at a fixed energy of 10.5 eV. Representative organic molecules with different functional groups were examined, including aliphatic and aromatic alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkanols, ethers, amines, aldehydes, keton… Show more

“…The neutral mixed cluster binding energies were decomposed into the terms representing the many-body interactions (see eqs. [5][6][7][8]) to understand the size-dependence trend found here for the incremental binding energy. Table 3. shows the average binding energies and their components calculated by DFT (without ZPE corrections) for the alcohol clusters ranging from the dimer to the pentamer.…”

“…Another difference arises from the stronger intensity of m/z 42 and 56 peaks for the steady-state operating condition. These features are associated to the rearrangement of fragment ions from alkenes after the ionization process, as observed by Van Bramer and Johnston (1990) and Shi and Lipson (2005). axes represent loadings (molecules) scales.…”

“…Single photon ionization (SPI) is another attractive soft ionization technique because of its low degree of fragmentation with simple spectrum interpretation compared with conventional EI method [26,27], especially for complex samples (e.g., gasoline and diesel [28,29], cigarette smoke [30], and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) [31][32][33]). The coupling of SPI with time-of-flight mass spectrometer (SPI-TOFMS) has the advantages of both rapid detection speed and simple spectra analysis [34,35].…”
