An Overview of the Chemistry and Pharmacological Potentials of Furanones Skeletons

Abstract: The furanone structure, a significant group of heterocyclic compounds, is frequently found in natural products that are exhibiting striking pharmacological effects and a growing field of research. They have a wide spectrum of pharmaceutical activity: anticataract, anticancer, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant. This review article presents a summary of natural furanones, synthetic methods, and the biological effects of these important compounds. Solid-phase method, cross-coupling reactions, Maill… Show more

“…Many furanone-containing compounds are known to show interesting biological activities [24] such as antibacterial, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antitumor activities. Prior work has shown the need for expensive transition metal catalysts for each transformation desired, posing potential drawbacks for the synthesis of these functionalized alkylidenefuranones [25].…”

“…These days, the synthesis of furanone derivatives and the exploration of their medicinal effects have been some of the main concerns of researchers [35]. Furanone is divided into three categories: 2(3H)-furanone, 2(5H)-furanone, and 3(2H)-furanone [36]. 2(5H)-furanone (Figure 8) units are widely present in many natural products as structural components and skeletons [37].…”

“…Furan-2(5 H )-ones, 1 also known as γ-butenolides, are ubiquitous in natural products 2 and medicinal compounds. 3 Moreover, they have also been used as synthons and intermediates in organic synthesis. 4 Thus, the development of a facile synthetic pathway toward such frameworks remains a desired goal for organic chemists.…”
