“…However, the use of animal models in preclinical studies is still controversial. Because the use of animals in scientific studies requires the observance of strict ethical principles (72,(182)(183)(184). Thus, in recent years, studies in the field of neurological disorders have led to the use of new technologies such as organ-on-a-chip.…”

“…Thus, in recent years, studies in the field of neurological disorders have led to the use of new technologies such as organ-on-a-chip. Since this strategy is based on the use of the patient's stem cells, some of the issues accompanied by applying animal models during the drug discovery and development platforms can be almost addressed and the studies can be upgraded to a more accurate level (183). Moreover, the application of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and its subsets (e.g., machine learning) as cutting-edge technologies could revolutionize biomedical studies, particularly ASD diagnosis and treatment (185)(186)(187).…”

“…A zebrafish larvae model was established for in vivo studies of diabetes mellitus with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (DM‐HFrEF) by sequentially treating them with a combination of d ‐glucose (Kim et al., 2023), STZ and terfenadine, a potassium channel blocker. Diabetic zebrafish treated with terfenadine showed significantly less myocardial fractional shortening, more irregular contractions, significant increase in the levels of natriuretic peptide B (a heart failure biomarker), markedly reduced motility and reduced survival rates (Larijani et al., 2021; Kim et al., 2023). The importance of this novel model relies in the possibility of performing mechanistic studies to understand the pathophysiology of DM‐HFrEF (Kim et al., 2023).…”

“…For instance, aflibercept 100 μg/mL efficacy was confirmed, as it could improve the hyperglycaemia‐increased expression of diabetic retinopathy inflammatory markers and the diameters of retinal vessels in the zebrafish eye. Moreover, the pdx1 mutant is a valuable resource for molecular studies to identify new targets for the treatment of early as well as late diabetic retinopathy (Larijani et al., 2021). In the pdx1 −/− zebrafish mutant DR model, both vascular aspects responded to antiangiogenic and antihyperglycaemic pharmacological interventions in the larval stage, and were accompanied by alterations in nitric oxide metabolism.…”

“…Zebrafish also possess a high fecundity, allowing for genetic screens [ 134 , 135 , 136 , 137 , 138 , 139 , 140 , 141 , 142 , 143 , 144 ] and high throughput assays to assess varied compounds and their role in developmental processes [ 145 , 146 , 147 , 148 , 149 , 150 , 151 , 152 ]. For example, RAR and RXR agonists/antagonists and their role in developmental processes can be explored by adding these compounds at various times ( Figure 2 ).…”
