An unsafe behaviour formation mechanism based on risk perception

Abstract: It is commonly acknowledged that human behaviour is implicated in most safety problems. However, research on the formation mechanism of unsafe behaviour remains incomplete. Risk perception is one of the fundamental issues in risk research, and individual risk perception can be identified as a critical antecedent of human behaviour. This study attempts to construct and test a theoretical model to reveal the formation mechanism of unsafe behaviour based on risk perception. First, to lay a solid foundation for th… Show more

“…The manuscript introduces the SOR theory into the field of behavioral safety and expands the application scope of this theory. Besides, the formation mechanism of unsafe behavior mainly aims to deeply explore the logical relationship between the concerned events and the causal factors ( Huang et al, 2019 ). This explanation of the random combination of influencing factors breaks through the limitations of the single factor analysis.…”

“…This explanation of the random combination of influencing factors breaks through the limitations of the single factor analysis. In addition, previous studies on the formation process of unsafe behavior have been conducted from the perspective of cognition ( Fang et al, 2016 ), risk perception ( Huang et al, 2019 ), etc., and rarely from the perspective of motivation. Therefore, this study provides a new insight into how construction workers’ unsafe behavior occurs, which is a perfection and supplement to the existing literature.…”

“…In addition, it may be possible to explain this finding from the perspective of risk perception. When workers are in an unconventional environment of dangerous chemicals or in the face of abnormal mechanical equipment, they often have fear psychology, which can easily cause unsafe behavior among workers [42].…”
