An urban consolidation center in the city of Copenhagen: A simulation study

Abstract: Urban consolidation centers (UCCs) have a key role in many initiatives in urban logistics, yet few of them are successful in the long run. The high costs often prevent attracting a sufficient number of UCC users. In this paper, we study sustainable business models and the supporting role of administrative policies. We perform an agent-based simulation applied to the city of Copenhagen and collect data from a variety of sources to model the agents. Both the data and case setup are validated by means of expert i… Show more

“…Primarily however, city logistics promotes consolidation schemes such as urban consolidation centres (UCC's) (Strale, 2019, van Heeswijk et al, 2019. The goal of consolidation is according to Allen et al (2014) to achieve higher vehicle fill rates to reduce traffic volumes while maintaining the same goods volumes.…”

“…There have been several FLP studies [53,54] done in the recent years, however, they were focussed on identifying locations mainly for establishing urban consolidation centres (UCCs). Note that although CDPs are also a form of UCCs (in terms of the function to store and consolidate parcels near the consumption areas), the way last-mile deliveries take place via CDPs is different than the way they are done via UCCs [55]. Unlike UCCs, where parcels are delivered to consumers by a service provider, CDPs require parcels to be picked up by consumers, thereby requiring consumers to travel to CDPs.…”

“…The result shows that the potential benefits of the UCC could generate from either improving the utilization of vehicle capacity through consolidation, or by shifting the location of distribution center to less expensive area. Van Heeswijk, Larsen [34] adopt the agent-based model simulations in the city of Copenhagen, to evaluate the UCC related urban logistics schemes. The results indicate that many schemes during the simulations can yield the benefits by reducing truck kilometers driven by up to 65% and emission reductions up to 70%.…”
