Anaerobic co-digestion of sodium hydroxide pretreated sugarcane leaves with pig manure and dairy manure

Abstract: Sugarcane leaves (SL) pretreated by alkali was used as substrate to enhance biogas production via mesophilic anaerobic digestion (AD) in this study. Effectiveness of different concentrations of NaOH pretreatment on AD performance was investigated. Results showed that compared to untreated sample of SL, the lignocellulose (LCH) content of NaOH pretreated group was decreased by 5.79%-16.85%. However, the cumulative biogas production of the pretreated samples increased in the range of 34.54%-82.67%; moreover, T90… Show more

“…Pretreatment duration in this study is less than that of the ammonium fiber explosion (AFEX), NaOH, KOH, liquid hot water (LHW), and dilute acid (DA) methods. [58] Sodium hydroxide (6% NaOH) pretreatment 25 • C, 3 days N/A-One-stage 287 mL/g-TS added [57] Potassium hydroxide (KOH) pretreatment 170 • C, 60 min N/A-One-stage 205 mL/g-TS added [59] Liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment 190 • C, 60 min N/A-One-stage 162 mL/g-TS added [59] Dilute acid (DA) pretreatment 170 • C, 15 min N/A-One-stage 156 mL/g-TS added [59] DES Pretreatment 120 Moreover, the pretreatment temperature used in this research was lower than the KOH, LHW, and DA pretreatment. Results revealed the advantages of the DES pretreatment in terms of energy efficiency.…”

“…Due to the high difference in density of solid biomass particles, the separation of a solid-liquid mixture is inevitable [3,4] . Specifically, this is manifested as the sedimentation and floating of straw particles, which is not conducive to fermentation [5,6] .…”

“…The band at 1633.97 cm-1 represents the presence of C=C bonds. The peak at 1038.54 cm-1 shows us that C-O stretching is also present in it which indicates the presence of primary alcohol in it whereas the presence of a sharp peak at 795.93 cm-1 indicates the presence of C=H stretching [14]. Similarly, the Peak at 3319.26 cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum of filter cake was also observed representing the presence of the O-H group i.e.…”
