Improving the Ability of Prospective Teachers: Errors Analysis of Material Geometry and Prevention Strategies

This study analyzes the errors made by students when studying geometry and provides prevention strategies for prospective mathematics teachers. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The instruments used were tests and interviews involving 16 prospective mathematics teacher respondents. Data were validated using the triangulation techniques by comparing answers based on test and interview results. The results of the research show the following conceptual errors made by the students: (i) while studying the concept of scale, it was seen that the writing of the scale can be expressed in the form of a fraction – the strategy to increase teacher’s TPACK ability is to ask students to analyze the difference between ½ and 1:2; (ii) errors in understanding the concept of a circle – the strategy to prevent this is to show a sample of a circular shape to the students; (ii) errors in distinguishing between the concepts of a circle and round – the strategy to prevent this is to remind students of the lyrics of the song “My hat is round” or the shape of the snack “tofu is round” and ask them to compare it with a ball; and (iv) limited understanding of the principle of the size of a triangle, namely the square of the longest side is less than the sum of the squares of the other sides – the strategy to prevent this is to ask students to analyze the patterns of pairs of sides. The novelty of this study not only analyzes the possible mistakes made by prospective teachers and students in teaching and studying geometry, respectively, but also provides an overview of the solution steps that teachers can take if their students face difficulty in learning geometry. Lines and angles are quite important mathematical concepts. This is proven because lines and angles cannot be separated in life. However, lines and angles actually become a problem/obstacle in the classroom. The purpose of this research is to determine the description of students' learning obstacles in the material on lines and angles for class VIII MTs NW Pringgajurang, then a didactic design for learning lines and angles will be prepared. The research design used is didactical design research-interpretive. The participants in this research were Class VIII students at MTs NW Pringgajurang with an age range of 12 to 14 years. The researcher is the main instrument in this research, with several additional instruments such as tests for understanding lines and angles, student biodata, interview guides and didactic designs for lines and angles. The data analysis technique used in this research is thematic data analysis. This thematic analysis is used as a basic foundation for the analytical process in qualitative research, by paying attention to the results of the data collection carried out. The results of the research show that students experience learning obstacles with ontogenic psychological and ontogenic conceptual types. With this Android-based didactic design, it is hoped that it will be able to minimize barriers to students' learning on line and angle material at MTs NW Pringgajurang.

<div><p>Learning trajectory on the topic of plane figures (i.e., perimeter and area of squares and rectangles) is necessary for elementary students to facilitate meaningful learning and predict their learning progress. This study aims to develop a learning trajectory through various tasks for the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles that can help students develop understanding and construct mathematical concepts. Study participants were fourth grade elementary students. The method used was design research, which has three stages: preparing for the experiment, teaching, and retrospective analysis. This study used data collection instruments in worksheets, observation sheets, interview guidelines, and field notes. Research results obtained included a learning trajectory that contains adequate learning activities to facilitate learning for elementary students on the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles. Adequate learning trajectory is obtained in hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) 2, which was previously revised from HLT 1. Learning trajectory developed through a variety of tasks can significantly construct and facilitate elementary students’ knowledge to learn the concepts of perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.</p></div>
