Analysis and calibration of absorptive images of Bose–Einstein condensate at nonzero temperatures

Abstract: We describe the method allowing quantitative interpretation of absorptive images of mixtures of BEC and thermal atoms which reduces possible systematic errors associated with evaluation of the contribution of each fraction. By using known temperature dependence of the BEC fraction, the analysis allows precise calibration of the fitting results. The developed method is verified in two different measurements and compares well with theoretical calculations and with measurements performed by another group.

“…Yet, a closer look at the last expression of Eq. (20) indicates that the product PV not only has the units of energy, the right hand side is nothing but the virial expression for the "pressure" [42]. That is, if we replace the harmonic potential by one of a vessel of rigid walls, then P and V are replaced by p and V in Eq.…”

“…Returning to the characteristics of the here proposed equation of state for the homogeneous fluid, we insist in its motivation by the experimental fittings to density profiles of ultracold gases [19,20]. The experiments clearly show that, when BE condensation is reached, the thermal part of the cloud is fitted quite well by a classical ideal gas, while the condensate peak allows for a Thomas-Fermi (TF) adjustment [4,5].…”

“…This is a mechanism for slowing down the movement of atoms or cooling of gas. Thus, at the expense of its kinetic energy, an atom emits more light energy than it absorbs, and gradually reduces its speed, and therefore the gas cools (Szczepkowski et al, 2009). …”

“…We therefore extract the temperature using the method presented in [15]. The central interacting region is systematically excluded from our measurements by performing multiple fits of a Bose-enhanced Gaussian to the wings of the profile, with a varying cut-off width for the excluded central region.…”

“…For temperatures below T c , we perform a bimodal fit of a Bose-enhanced Gaussian to the thermal fraction, and a Thomas-Fermi profile to the condensed fraction using the method presented in [15]. Integration over the entire bimodal profile gives the total optical density n OD , which is directly proportional to the number of atoms N , given by N = n OD A p /σ.…”
