“…Previous studies as well as the present study failed to observe any risk of 2/2 genotype at codon 72 of p53 for the oral cancer and HNSCC. [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] Thus, it appears that individuals with specific p53 genotypes are more susceptible to the development of tobacco-assisted oral leukoplakia, indicating a possible role of 2/2 variant of p53 codon 72 in early stages of oral cancer development. We speculate that processing of the signals generated from the tobacco-associated DNA damage is differentially regulated depending on both specific p53 variant present and the developmental stage of the incipient tumor.…”

“…So far, only a few studies have reported a lack of association of the p53 codon 72 2/2 genotype with susceptibility to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] but significant difference in haplotype frequency between head and neck cancer patients and controls has been observed. 32 To date, there is no report on association of a particular p53 genotype and/or haplotype in tobaccoassociated leukoplakia.…”

“…Shen et al (2002) analyzed oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal cancer specifically, whereas Ji et al (2008) and Chen et al (2008) studied oropharyngeal cancer as well as oral cancer. Overall, a total of 27 studies consisting of 3966 HNCs cases and 4387 controls were included in our meta-analysis (Yung et al, 1997;Golovleva et al, 1997;McWilliams et al, 2000;Hamel et al, 2000;Summersgill et al, 2000;Tandle et al, 2001;Sourvinos et al, 2001;Nagpal et al, 2002;Shen et al, 2002;Tsai et al, 2002;Tiwawech et al, 2003;Kietthubthew et al, 2003;Katiyar et al, 2003;Scheckenbach et al, 2004;Cortezzi et al, 2004;Hsieh et al, 2005;Sousa et al, 2006;Twu et al, 2006;Hadhri-Guiga et al, 2007;Perrone et al, 2007;Kuroda et al, 2007;Ji et al, 2008;Chen et al, 2007Chen et al, , 2008Lin et al, 2008;Tu et al, 2008;Misra et al, 2009) (Table 2). The genotype distribution of the TP53 Arg72Pro polymorphism is summarized in Table 3.…”

“…Two studies were from the USA [ethnicity was mixed (white, black, and others; or non-Hispanic white and others)] (Summersgill et al, 2000;, two were from India (Nagpal et al, 2002;Katiyar et al, 2003), one was from Malaysia (Saini et al, 2011), two were from Germany (Scheckenbach et al, 2004;Hoffmann et al, 2009), one was from Italy (Perrone et al, 2007), and one was from Brazil (Cortezzi et al, 2004). The baseline characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1.…”
