Analysis of mRNA‑lncRNA and mRNA‑lncRNA-pathway co‑expression networks based on WGCNA in developing pediatric sepsis

Abstract: Pediatric sepsis is a great threat to death worldwide. However, the pathogenesis has not been clearly understood until now in sepsis. This study identified differentially expressed mRNAs and lncRNAs based on Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. And the weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) was performed to explore co-expression modules associated with pediatric sepsis. Then, Gene Ontology (GO), KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway, mRNA-lncRNA and mRNA-lncRNA-pathway co-expre… Show more

“…In addition, Gong et al showed nine genes in three datasets (GSE95233, GSE57065, and GSE28750) that had diagnostic value for sepsis, some of which were validated by real-time PCR [ 24 ]. Zhang et al reported 4 lncRNAs and 15 mRNAs as the critical genes for diagnosing paediatric sepsis based on WGCNA [ 25 ]. Although several studies have found potential genetic markers for diagnosing sepsis, their sample size was small, and there was not enough verification of their results on other datasets.…”

“…Due to their lack of protein-coding potential, they were initially defined as transcriptional noises without biological functions. Nevertheless, their abundance in the mammalian genome and various coding-independent functions enable them to be actively implicated in different cellular processes [ 4 , 5 ]. Apart from the aberrant expression of protein-coding genes, dysregulation of lncRNAs, like other non-coding RNAs, is critical in tumorigenesis and cancer progression [ 6 ].…”

“…LncRNAs are a family of RNAs with more than 200 nucleotides in length which do not code for proteins [ 5 ]. A growing number of studies have recently demonstrated that aberrant expression of lncRNAs play vital roles in many different types of human cancer, including OSCC, osteosarcoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and gastric cancer [ 6 ].…”
