Analysis of Surface Diffusion Phenomena in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography

Abstract: Surface diffusion data obtained for a reversed-phase liquid chromatographic system (octadecylsilyl silica gel and a 70/30 (v/v) methanol/water solution) were analyzed in relation to their molecular diffusivity (D m ). The adsorbateadsorbent interactions between the studied compounds and the stationary phase were taken into account. The surface diffusion coefficient (D s ) depends on the mobilephase composition, especially on the nature and concentration of the organic modifiers. Differences between the values … Show more

“…On the basis of these results, we proposed a surface-restricted molecular diffusion model for surface diffusion as a first approximation of the mechanism of surface diffusion and tried to consistently explain some intrinsic characteristics of surface diffusion. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] The semi-logarithmic plots between the ratios DLs/Dm and Ds/Dm and -Qst in Fig. 6 fluctuate around a single straight line, although there is some scatter.…”

“…This model is useful for a comprehensive interpretation of the intrinsic characteristics of surface diffusion. A new estimation procedure of D s was also proposed on the basis of the new model [15,47]. We also derived information on the adsorption/desorption kinetics at the actual adsorption sites in RPLC by analyzing the dependence of the mass transfer rate coefficient (k m ) on retention [50].…”

“…This result suggests that there may be a kind of intimate correlation between surface diffusion and molecular diffusion [24]. From these observations, K. M. and Guiochon have proposed a surface-restricted molecular diffusion model as a first approximation for the mechanism of surface diffusion [16,[23][24][25][28][29][30][31] and formulated the new model on the basis of the absolute rate theory [32]. On the other hand, in In Fig.…”
