Analysis of the coupling of communication network and safety application in cooperative collision warning systems

Abstract: Cooperative collision avoidance systems rely on communication between vehicles to achieve the objective of automated or human-dependent crash avoidance. In this paper we investigate the mutual coupling of communication component and the safety application in cooperative collision warning systems. These systems are warning based collision avoidance systems that are currently under field test. We present a comprehensive co-simulation modeling framework which allows modeling and study of the entire system includi… Show more

“…This is expected since this method reacts to PER by increasing the rate. The logic behind the results are consistent with our previous work [2]. While the work in [2] evaluated algorithms such as CAMPLinear, here we look at the performance of our time based FCW algorithm.…”

“…Effect of communication loss and safety application can be modeled similar to the work in [2].However, here we are considering different safety applications than in [2]. We first assume that the communication performance is independent from safety application behavior.…”

“…However, the wireless nature of vehicular communications makes it susceptible to significant communication delays [14] and packet losses [15] in dense traffic scenarios or under security attacks [16]. Previous works on intelligent intersection management lack the consideration of communication message delays and losses, and consequently cannot ensure the proposed protocols to be safe, deadlock free and efficient in practical conditions.…”
