Analysis of the natural radioactivity concentrations of the fine dust samples in Jeju Island, Korea and the annual effective radiation dose by inhalation

Abstract: This study analyzed the concentrations of potassium, thorium and uranium of the atmospheric PM10 aerosols which were collected at Gosan of Jeju Island during the year of 2014. The mean mass concentration of PM10 was 47.31 μg/m3. The mean radioactive concentrations of 40K, 232Th and 238U were 7.89, 0.25 and 0.30 μBq/m3, respectively. The 232Th/238U activity concentration ratio of PM10 was 0.830. The 232Th/238U ratio during Asian Dust days is 1.073, which is higher than those in other atmospheric conditions. The… Show more

“…However, the calculated values in this study area were 4.5 times less for 232 Th and 2.3 times less for 238 U. On the other hand, the world mean atmospheric activity concentrations of 232 Th, 226 Ra and 238 U associated with dust are 0.5, 1.0 and 1.0 μBq.m À3 , respectively (Han and Park, 2018).…”

“…People are also exposed to anthropogenically produced radioisotopes such as used in nuclear medicine, residuals from atmospheric weapons tests, and from disasters like Chernobyl and Fukashima (Ajithra et al 2017). Chernobyl and Fukushima released radioactivity producing worldwide radionuclide contamination in addition to the nuclear weapons testing in the atmosphere upto 1963 and from some subsequent venting of underground tests (Han and Park 2018;Jia et al 2005). Greater than half of total radioactive dose is associated with inhaled radioactivity associated with airborne particulate matter of different sizes (Sahin et al 2017;Tabar et al 2017).…”
