Ultrasonic solvent extraction of persistent organic pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from airborne particles is reported. The extraction was optimized as functions of type and amount of solvent, sonication time, and number of extraction steps. Determination of PAHs and PCBs carried out by GC/MSD, while OCPs were determined using GC/l-ECD. The optimum extraction procedure was determined as three times consecutive extraction using a 25 mL mixture of n-hexane:petroleum ether (1/1, v/v) for 15 min of sonication. Recoveries were obtained between 91 l 2 and 96 l 1% with Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) f l 4% for PCBs, for PAHs recoveries (except for naphthalene, a 31%) were between 66 l 6 and 90 l 4% with RSD f l 8% while OCPs compounds recoveries were between 67 l 5 and 120 l 7% with RSD f l 7%. When comparing the Soxhlet extraction method with optimized ultrasonic solvent extraction method, extraction time and solvent volume were reduced considerably with the ultrasonic solvent extraction method without reducing extraction efficiency. In addition, a simultaneous analysis of PCBs, PAHs, and OCPs in one sampling by the optimized method is quite advantageous in terms of analysis time and cost.

Scientists are certain that a number of synthetic chemicals act like hormones (e.g. estrogen) and interact with the human hormone system. Scientists also agree that the magnitude of the problem (including human exposure) is uncertain. Therefore, the analysis of phenols in natural wastewater and soils is of prime importance to environmental organizations due to their frequent occurrence in a wide range of industrial waste and natural water. They are toxic and have an effect upon aquatic organism including bioaccumulation in the tissue of fish.

Este trabalho relata um método envolvendo derivação in situ e extração para determinação de resíduos de PCP em amostras de água. O derivado acetilado de PCP é analisado por cromatografia a gás com detector por captura de elétrons. O limite de detecção do método é de 1 µg/L e sua eficiência é demonstrada pelos valores médios de recuperação (78-108%) estudados em três níveis de fortificação (2; 10 e 20 µg/L).In this study, an in situ derivatization and extraction method for the determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) has been applied successfully in the analysis of water samples. The PCP derivative analysis was performed by gas-liquid chromatography with electron capture detection. The limit of detection of the method is 1 µg/L and recoveries averaged 78-108% for PCP acetate at levels of 2, 10 and 20 µg/L.
