Analyzing furnace-lining integrity using nodal wear modeling

Abstract: Furnace Integrity OverviewThe Nodal Wear Model was developed to systematize the analysis of corrosion phenomena on refractory and ceramic materials that come in contact with corrosive fl uids in furnace linings. The model is based on the determination of the thermal fi eld in the furnace lining using a fi nite-element-method grid in which a second grid is defi ned to represent the surface of the lining that is attacked by the molten phases. Using a control equation for the wear-corrosion thermal-activated phen… Show more

“…By means of the application of the NWM to the PSC, different alternatives to magnesite-chrome bricks may be studied and simulated for the construction of the linings. 8 The first consequences of the research work of the Copper Group in the application of the NWM to the PSC aimed at increasing the number of cycles while maintaining the MgOCr 2 O 3 ெFeO system as the refractory system, are the following: a To situate a carbon product of high conductivity 25-50 Wெm 1 ெK 1 below the working refractory in contact with the steel shell. When increasing the thermal conductivity of the coatings, the nodal temperature drops, T i Fig.…”

“…One fundamental hypothesis of NWM, and which justifies the differentials refractory wears that contact with fused, is that by which the speed of erosion, n eros , depends on the node temperature i, T i , and on the temperature differences that are reached between node, i, and its adjacent node, iϩ1, 9,10) : …”

“…Habitualmente, en los trabajos publicados anteriormente, se utilizaba el MDM para reproducir o justificar la degradación de los revestimientos bajo diferentes situaciones [3], [4] . Ahora, utilizando como punto de partida las variables, T i y h f g-i , se consigue obtener parámetros físicos relevantes relativos a las características del coque y arrabio en el crisol del horno alto.…”
