Anthelmintic activity of carvacryl acetate against Schistosoma mansoni

Abstract: Blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma are the causative agents of human schistosomiasis, a debilitating disease that afflicts over 200 million people worldwide. Praziquantel is the drug of choice but concerns over praziquantel resistance have renewed interest in the search for alternative drug therapies. Carvacrol, a naturally occurring monoterpene phenol and food additive, has been shown high medicinal importance, including antimicrobials activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro effect of ca… Show more

“…The mechanism by which terpenes exert their schistosomicidal effect may be that, due to inherent lipophilicity, some terpenes will easily cross plasmatic membranes and, consequently, may also interact with intracellular molecules of parasites. In fact, some of the compounds described herein are capable of causing morphological changes in the integument of worms, and a relationship has been observed between tegumental damage and the death of worms [39,56,[59][60].…”

“…The terpenes with antischistosomal activity are: rotundifolone [66], (+)-limonene epoxide [56], and carvacryl acetate, a derivative of carvacrol (monoterpenes) [39]; artemisinin and its derivatives [30,31], nerolidol [59], and budlein-A and its derivatives [38] (sesquiterpenes); phytol [60] (diterpene), betulin [37] and its triphenylphosphonium derivatives [69], balsaminol F, karavilagenin C [36] (triterpenes) (Figure 1). Importantly, among the group of terpenes, in vitro and in vivo antischistosomal properties have been described only for artemisinin and its derivatives, phytol and triphenylphosphonium derivatives, whereas it was reported in vitro schitosomicidal activity for other terpenes (Table 1).…”

“…Male and female adults of S. mansoni differ in their sensitivity to drugs (Moraes et al, 2013). For example, males of S. mansoni exposed to the essential oil from Ageratum conyzoides tended to be more susceptible than females (Melo et al, 2011).…”

“…This fact highlights the importance to research new treatment alternatives. In the last few years, some natural compounds isolated from the Terpenes group, have already shown schistosomicidal activity and against others infectious neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) Eg: the monoterpenes, carvacryl acetate, dihydro citronellol and sesquiterpene lactones [5][6][7].…”
