“…Our results are in agreement with previous reports that memory impairment induced by the administration of scopolamine is associated with increased peroxidation and overproduction of free radicals, which reduces the levels of endogenous antioxidants. [33][34][35] The Hippocampus is the main area involved in learning and memory. Cognitive deficits are observed in clinical situation like AD or experimental animal model involving lesion to the hippocampus.…”

“…Scopolamine-induced amnesia animals have been widely used for preliminary evaluation of potential cognition-enhancing activities of herbal and other agents (7,12,18,19,23). Scopolamine induces cognitive deficits not only by inducing a cholinergic deficit (7,12,19,24,25), but also by inducing oxidative stress (7,12,19,(23)(24)(25). Moreover, Van der Vliet and Bast (8) reported that reactive oxygen metabolites affect binding of ligands to membrane receptors, such as muscarinic cholinergic receptors, indicating that oxidative stress induces cholinergic dysfunction.…”

“…The CMT concentration is usually used for patient with cognitive dysfunction, and this finding is consistent with our previous report. 21) Hippocampal neurogenesis has been proved to be an important event for cognitive function. 26,27) Therefore, the effect of CMT on cell genesis in dentate gyrus was further investigated to elucidate the potential mechanism of memory improvement.…”

“…Our recent studies suggested that CMT improves cognitive performance of amnesic mice by regulation of cholinergic marker enzyme activities and the antioxidant defense system. 20,21) However, these studies did not report the effect of CMT on cell genesis in hippocampus. Oh et al 17) reported that the multiherbal formula Guibi-tang enhances memory and increases cell proliferation in the rat hippocampus, but cell survival in the dentate gyrus was not investigated in this research.…”
