Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Neolignans Newly Isolated from the Crude Drug “Shin-i” (Flos Magnoliae)

Abstract: The anti-inflammatory effects of the major components of the dried flower buds of MAGNOLIA SALICIFOLIA were determined using the pouch granuloma method in mice. Though alkaloids, fatty acids, essential oils, and lignans had no anti-inflammatory effects, neolignans (magnoshinin and magnosalin) significantly inhibited the granuloma tissue formation. The inhibitory effect of magnoshinin was particularly strong, being nearly half of that of hydrocortisone acetate when administered orally. Some differences were not… Show more

“…Moreover, it has been reported that Flos magnoliae extract (FME) has an antiangiogenic (23) and an anti-inflammatory effect (24). In this study, we demonstrated that FME inhibited the development of type 1 diabetes, indicating that FME has the potential for use as a therapeutic agent to treat diabetes.…”

“…The drug was collected between late winter and early spring before flowering, removed from branchlet, and dried in the shade. Pharmacological studies have revealed in to have neuromuscular bloking, 2 inotropic effect, 3 anti-inflammatory, [4][5][6][7] anti-allergy, 8 anti-angiogenic, 9 PAF receptor antagolist 10 and vasorelaxant activities. 11 HPLC-UV analytical methods for biondnoid I, 12 magnolin, 13 magnolin and fargesin, 14 and magnolin and anthricin 15 had been reported.…”

“…Magno salin and magnoshinin are isolated from 'Shin-i' [1] and are classed as neolignans. We have previously re ported that both compounds (per os) inhibit the for mation of granuloma in the mouse pouch induced by Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) containing croton oil [2]. The inhibitory effect of magnoshinin is greater than that of magnosalin, and the potency is half that of hydrocortisone, a typical anti-inflammatory ste roid.…”
