Anti-Oxidant Study of Citrullus Colocynthis Roots in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Objective: The main objective is to investigate anti-oxidant activity of ethanoic and aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis (EECC &AECC) in streptozotocin -induced diabetic rats. Methods: Acute toxicity study of EECC and AECC was carried out in rats to determine its dose for further study. Oral glucose tolerance test was performed to evaluate EECC and AECC on elevated blood glucose levels. Diabetes was induced in rats by administration of streptozotocin (STZ) (45mg/kg) and it was confirmed after 48hrs after… Show more

“…The therapy was begun on the 10th day after the induction of alloxan monohydrate. A dose of 150 and 300 mg/kg of the methanolic extract of E. prostrata was administered orally to groups III and IV, respectively, with slight modi cations [20]. The Glibenclamide (10 mg/kg/day) was given orally to group V as a standard drug.…”

“…15 days after the injection of STZ, the remediation began with CC. Tus, the aqueous extract of CC (200 mg/kg) was administered orally every day for 40 consecutive days [27]. A dose response study was conducted to reaching the dose with maximum efectiveness.…”

“…Consequently, the diabetic rats in all the treated groups received CCAE (200 mg/kg) as the daily oral treatment [23]. Also, other authors such as Kalva et al used a dose of 200 mg/kg [27].…”
