The antibacterial activity of aqueous and methanol extracts of leaves/shoots of five salt marsh halophytes and six mangroves was studied against methicillin resistant, clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. There was a clear comparability between the salt marsh halophytes and mangroves in their antibacterial action. The mangrove plants possessed higher antibacterial potency than the salt marsh halophytes. The highest activity was recorded with the methanol extract of Excoecaria agallocha followed by the methanol extracts of Aegiceras corniculatum, Lumnitzera racemosa and Ceriops decandra. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranged from 0.125 to 4 mg/mL and 1 to 16 mg/mL for methanol and aqueous extracts, respectively. Further separation of active principle from the potent mangrove plant will be useful for the control of drug resistant strains of S. aureus.

A new atisane-type diterpene, ent-16α-hydroxy-atisane-3,4-lactone (4) and three known diterpenes, ent-16α-hydroxy-atisane-3-one (1), ent-atisane-3β,16α-diol (2), ent-3,4-seco-16α-hydroxyatis- 4(19)-en -3-oic acid (3) were isolated from the bark of the mangrove plant Excoecaria agallocha. Their structures and relative stereochemistry were elucidated by means of extensive NMR and MS analysis. Compound 3 exhibited significant anti-microfouling activity against the adherence of Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes, with an EC50 value of 0.54 ± 0.01 ppm.

Terpenoids is a class of natural compounds found in higher plants, mosses, liverworts, algae and lichens, as well as in insects, microbes or marine organisms. Through centuries many of these compounds have been used as ingredients of perfumes, drugs, narcotics or pigments. Labdanes, belonging to the bicyclic diterpenoids group, have been found as secondary metabolites in tissues of fungi, insects, marine organisms, and in essential oils, resins and tissues of higher plants. The diterpenes of labdane type, have been reported to have broad spectrum of biological activities. In this study, the reported bioactivities and/or uses of them, the last two decades (1981-2004), are selected as an attempt to underline their role in nature.
