Anti-Tumour and Anti-Oxidative Potential of Diosgenin against 7, 12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene Induced Experimental Oral Carcinogenesis

Abstract: The ultimate aim of the present study was to exploring the chemopreventive efficacy of diosgenin on 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) induced hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis. The chemopreventive potential of diosgenin was evaluated by measuring the tumour incidence, tumour volume and tumour burden as well as analyzing the activities of detoxification agents, levels of lipid peroxidation byproducts and antioxidants status by specific colorimetric methods. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was develope… Show more

“…The direct relationships between lipid peroxidation (LPx) and antioxidant have been well reported in literature,[30] our results are in agreement with other observations. Exposures of DMBA significantly increased in LPx and decreased in antioxidant status were reported.…”

“…Numerous studies have demonstrated the increased lipid peroxidation and declining antioxidant status in experimental oral carcinogenesis [50]. On the other hand, tumor tissue has the ability to prevent lipid peroxidation through the highly evolved protective mechanisms so that rapid cell proliferation can occur [51]. Cancer cells are known to acquire certain characteristics that benefit proliferation [52] and they tend to proliferate faster when lipid peroxidation is low.…”

“…(22) Diosgenin decreased the oral tumor incidence signifi cantly in male Syrian golden hamster cheek pouch at the dose of 80 mg/kg by oral administration every other day for 16 weeks. (23) Esophageal Cancer Esophageal cancer is a common malignant tumor of digestive system. Diosgenin mainly have an obvious role on esophageal cancer cells Eca109.…”
