Antibacterial and antifungal two phenolic sesquiterpenes from Dysoxylum densiflorum

Abstract: A new phenolic sesquiterpene, dysoxyphenol (1), and the known sesquiterpene, 7R,10S-2-hydroxycalamenene (2), were isolated from the acetone extract of Dysoxylum densiflorum seeds. The structures of these compounds were determined based on physical, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and mass spectral data. Both compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal properties against seven pathogenic bacteria and two wood-rotting fungi, respectively. The results showed that both compounds have significant an… Show more

“…This plant grows up to 36 m in height, has a trunk with a diameter of up to 60 cm, and buttress roots with a diameter of up to 1.5 m. 1 In Indonesia, this species is distributed throughout Kalimantan (Borneo), Java, Maluku, Sulawesi, and Sumatera. 2 Several types of compounds have been isolated from the Dysoxylum genus, including alkaloids, 3,4 biflavonoids, 5 sesquiterpenes, 6,7 triterpenes, [8][9][10] and limonoids. 11,12 Previously, we discovered that an ethanolic extract of this plant collected from Pangandaran Nature Reserve in West Java Province, Indonesia, showed potential antiproliferative 13 and antiplasmodial 14 activities against MCF-7 human breast cancer cell lines and Plasmodium falciparum, respectively.…”

“…Compound 175 showed the same antifungal effect to both fungi at both concentrations. Compound 176 was able to inhibit the growth of white-rot fungi but not brown-rot fungi at the concentration of 0.46 mM and inhibited both fungi at a higher concentration (4.58 mM) [ 72 ].…”

“…Sesquiterpenes have been shown to exhibit different biological effects such as antibacterial, cytotoxic, and antifungal activities [39][40][41]. On the other hand, sesquiterpenes such as sesquicineole, spathulenol, α-bisabolol, and β-gurjunene were the main constituents of the essential oil obtained from aerial parts of E. pyramidale and accounted for over 59.7% of the oil (Table 1).…”
