“…Various known brown algal metabolites have been reported to have anticancer activities. The carotenoid pigment, fucoxanthin shows antiproliferative effects on non small cell lung cancer, 354 and inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells, 355 fucoxanthinol inhibits human colorectal cancer tumorigenicity, 356 tuberatolide B inhibits the growth of breast, lung, colon, prostate and cervical cancers. 357 Fucoxanthin also weakly inhibits monoamine oxidase A and B, prevents H 2 O 2 -induced neuronal apoptosis 358 and is antioxidant and antihypertensive.…”

“…Oral glucose tolerance tests in diabetic mice using these insect GAGs are necessary to ascertain their anti-diabetic effects even though they were not accurate because the orally administered GAGs are also digested and increase the levels of mono (neutral, amino and acid) sugars. In fact, specific functional groups including epoxy, hydroxyl and carbonyl contribute to potent free radicalscavenging activity [26]. In addition to anti-oxidant activities, GbG exhibits unremarkable anti-diabetic activity without adverse effects in in vitro or in vivo models.…”

“…All the extracts showed a dose-dependent antiproliferative activity against all the cancer cell lines, although G. corticata had the greatest inhibition activity against MCF-7 cell line (IC 50 value of 30 μg/mL after 24 of treatment). Lopes-Costa et al [ 253 ] reported that phloroglucinol not only reduced the growth of two colorectal cancer cell lines (HCT116 and HT29), but also intensified the activity of 5-fluorouracil, one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs to treat colorectal cancer. Two polybrominated diphenyl ethers, 3,4,5-tribromo-2-(2’,4’-dibromophenoxy)-phenol and 3,5-dibromo-2-(2’,4’-dibromophe-noxy)-phenol, which were isolated from Dysidea sp., an Indonesian marine sponge, showed antiproliferative activity against PANC-1 cells under glucose-starved conditions.…”
