“…In recently years, diverse biological activities have been focused for algae SPs (Nishino et al, 1991;Farias et al, 2000;Matsubara et al, 2001;Mourão, 2004;Talarico et al, 2004;Pereira et al, 2005;Pushpamali et al, 2008;Rodrigues et al, 2009b;Rodrigues et al, 2010;Rodrigues et al, 2011a). These studies suggested that was interesting to investigate this class of macromolecules in animal models (Mourão and Pereira, 1999;Farias et al, 2001;Zhang et al, 2003;Assreuy et al, 2008;Fonseca et al, 2008;Lins et al, 2009;Ananthi et al, 2010), as valuable tools on development of new pharmacological drugs.…”

“…Nevertheless, the adverse effect level of SPs depend the administered dose (Li et al, 2005). In recent years, SPs have been extensively studied as anticoagulant and antithrombotic agents (Farias et al, 2000;Matsubara et al, 2001;Mourão, 2004;Pereira et al, 2005;Pushpamali et al, 2008;Azevedo et al, 2009;Rodrigues et al, 2009a;Rodrigues et al, 2009b;Rodrigues et al, 2010;Mestechkina and Shcherbukhin, 2010;Rodrigues et al, 2011a). Their biological actions suggest that each SP may be dependent of a structural requirement (Mourão and Pereira, 1999;Pereira et al, 2005).…”

“…10) Fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus is composed of 44.1% fucose, 26.3% sulfate and ash, and a little amino-glucose. 11) It has been reported that fucoidan had various pharmacological properties such as an anti-coagulant, 12) anti-tumor, 13) anti-inflammatory, 14) and anti-oxidant, 15) and promoted the immune function. 16) Fucoidan also protected tissues from various types of injury by increasing the hepatic growth factor (HGF).…”

“…Arumugam et al 34 , had quantified the heparin yield as 2.27 g/kg and 2.2 g/kg from Tridacna maxima and Perna viridis respectively. Matsubara et al 35 reported an anticoagulant isolated from the green alga Codium cylindricum on thrombin activity in the absence of anti thrombin III and heparin cofactor II using chromogenic substrate. The result of the present study clearly showed average yield of heparin and heparin-like glycoasaminoglycans compared to existing reports.…”
