Antidepressant-like activity of Tagetes lucida Cav. is mediated by 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors

Abstract: It has been demonstrated that the aqueous extract of Tagetes lucida Cav. shows an antidepressant-like effect on the forced swimming test (FST) in rats. The aim of this study was to analyze the participation of the serotoninergic system in the antidepressant-like effect of the aqueous extract of T. lucida. Different doses of the extract of T. lucida were administered at 72, 48, 24, 18 and 1 h before FST. The animals were pretreated with a 5-HT1A receptor antagonist (WAY-100635, 0.5 mg/kg), a 5-HT2A receptor ant… Show more

“…Naringenin also revealed an antidepressant property by elevation of serotonin and norepinephrine concentration [ 34 ]. Recent studies demonstrated that quercetin, an extract of Tagetes lucida which has the similar structure with myricetin, may modulate the release and re-uptake of serotonin [ 35 ]. Another study also reported that myricetin may directly inhibit the activity of serotonin N -acetyltransferase, which catalyzes the conversion of serotonin to N -acetylserotonin [ 36 ].…”

“…Antiinflammatory: induced nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 production as well as the expression of COX-2 in macrophages was significantly inhibited by the essential oil (0.05-0.2 mg/ml) (Sepuĺveda-Arias et al, 2013). Antidepressant and anxiolytic: aqueous and organic extracts (10-300 mg/kg IP or 5-200 mg/kg PO for 14 days) showed significant effects in various rodent models; the antidepressantlike effects were shown to be mediated via a serotonergic mechanism (Guadarrama- Cruz et al, 2008;Gabriela et al, 2012;Guadarrama-Cruz et al, 2012;Bonilla-Jaime et al, 2015;Peŕez-Ortega et al, 2016).…”
