“…The physiological functions of C4-SBIs were investigated using the elegant virus-induced gene silencing strategy (VIGS) in Nicotiana benthamiana, as already established in the case of the C14-demethylation step (CYP51; [124]). VIGS of SMO1 and SMO2 indicated deficiencies in distinct entities based on distinct sterol profiles: SMO1-silenced plants exhibited 4,4-dimethyl-9β,19-cyclopropylsterols as major sterols whereas SMO2-silenced plants had 4α-methyl-∆ 7 -sterols [117].…”

“…Sargassum fusiforme is a kind of brown edible algae that is widely distributed on the seashores of China, Korea, and Japan as a therapeutic for thousands of years [ 21 ]. Saringosterol, a phytosterol extracted from Sargassum fusiforme , has been shown to exhibit anti-tubercular activity by inhibiting the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis [ 22 ], as well as antidepressant-like effects [ 23 ], anti-obesity activity [ 24 ], and the effect of preventing cognitive decline [ 25 ]. Furthermore, we previously demonstrated that saringosterol has a potent and selective action for LXRβ in vitro, and is a potentially natural cholesterol-lowering agent [ 26 ].…”
