Antimicrobial activity of different filling pastes for deciduous tooth treatment

Abstract: Guedes-Pinto paste is the filling material most employed in Brazil for endodontic treatment of deciduous teeth; however, the Rifocort ® ointment has been removed. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial potential of filling pastes, by proposing three new pharmacological associations to replace Rifocort ® ointment with drugs of already established antimicrobial power: Nebacetin ® ointment, 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate gel, and Maxitrol ® ointment. A paste composed of Iodoform, Rifocort ® … Show more

“…Although the paste meets several requirements to be considered an appropriate endodontic filling material for primary teeth, limitations to its use include the need to be manipulated right before its use and difficulties related to its insertion in the root canal. 13,16,17,18 To overcome these challenges, an experimental formulation based on the original formula of Guedes Pinto paste was developed (Registered Patent PI0802256-9, INPI 2018). The new formulation contains the same active components (iodoform, prednisolone acetate, rifamycin sodium, and PMCC) but with addition of new excipients.…”

“…Indeed, Guedes-Pinto paste has achieved success rates when used as root canal filling for primary teeth [9]. However, in early 2011, the removal of one of its components from the market, the Rifocort ® ointment (Medley S.A., Campinas, SP, Brazil), restricted the use of Guedes-Pinto paste and it has aroused researches in an attempt to replace this component [10,11]. Currently, there is uncertainty of which filling material is the most currently used in Brazilian dental schools.…”

“…Antoniazzi et al . () proposed three new pharmacological mixtures as filling materials for primary teeth: iodoform and camphorated paramonochlorophenol (CPC), which is associated with (i) Nebacetin ointment, (ii) 2% chlorhexidine gluconate gel, and (iii) Maxitrol ointment. They tested the antimicrobial activity of these materials in vitro , compared with that of Guedes‐Pinto paste, and obtained satisfactory results.…”

“…Guedes-Pinto paste (Guedes-Pinto et al 1981) is one such paste; however, its genotoxicity has not been assessed. Antoniazzi et al (2015) proposed three new pharmacological mixtures as filling materials for primary teeth:…”
