Antimicrobial Activity of Pregnenolone in vitro

Abstract: The antimicrobial effect of pregnenolone on clinical and reference strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was tested. Pregnenolone was found to have inhibitory activity against all tested bacterial strains. Slightly higher sensitivity is shown by the strains of S. aureus. When applied directly, pregnenolone has a weak antimicrobial effect due to its very low water solubility, as it is in oleose state because the formulation studied in this experiment contains tocopherol (a fat-soluble vitamin) a… Show more

“…Then, the same opacity of the 0.5 McFarland solution, including bacterial cells in the physiological serum, with the standard solution demonstrates 1.0−1.5 × 10 8 CFU/mL concentration. 91 The bacteria cells were placed on the agar gel surfaces by cotton swabs and transferred to the incubator at 37 ± 1.0 °C and a humidity of 95% for 24 h.…”

“…coli strains were initially incubated on Mueller–Hinton Agar gel in the Petri dishes for 24 h. For the standard of 0.5 McFarland solution, barium chloride 0.5% was added to sulfuric acid 0.36 N solution. “…For this aim, the opacity of the solutions was compared with a standard solution of barium chloride 0.5% in sulfuric acid 0.36 N (0.5 McFarland). 64 Then, the prepared cells were poured onto the agar gel surfaces using cotton swabs. Finally, the Petri dishes were put into the incubator and kept for 24 h at 37 ± 1.0 °C and a humidity of 95%.…”
