Antimicrobial evaluation of some medicinal plants for their anti‐enteric potential against multi‐drug resistant Salmonella typhi

Abstract: Screening was done of some plants of importance in the Ayurvedic system of traditional medicine used in India to treat enteric diseases. Fifty four plant extracts (methanol and aqueous) were assayed for their activity against multi-drug resistant Salmonella typhi. Strong antibacterial activity was shown by the methanol extracts of Aegle marmelos, Salmalia malabarica, Punica granatum, Myristica fragrans, Holarrhena antidysenterica, Terminalia arjuna and Triphal (mixture of Emblica of fi cinalis, Terminalia cheb… Show more

“…citri indicating its usefulness for the management of citrus canker disease [54] . It has also growth inhibitory action against Salmonella typhi [55] , Klebsiella [56] , Shigella [47] and intestinal bacteria [50] . Ethanol extract of T. chebula fruit showed strong antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli and phenolics were found to be responsible for this antibacterial activity [57,58] .…”

“…According to Veerappan et al (2007), extracts of Bael leaf have a high margin of drug safety. Alkaloid leaf extract and stem bark exhibit hypoglycemic (Saxena & Vikram 2004), antidiarrheal (Shoba & Thomas 2001), antibacterial (Rani & Khullar 2004) and antiviral (Badam et al 2002) effects. Plant extract endows anti-cancer property (Lotufo et al 2005).…”

“…Emblica fruit is reported to have antioxidant [2], hypolipidemic [3], and hypoglycemic activities [4], and acts as an important constituent of many hepatoprotective formulas [5]. It is also used as an antimicrobial agent [6], antitumor [7], or an anti-inflammatory agent [8] and can improve the metal-induced clastogenic effects [9].…”
