Background: Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) causes porcine pleuropneumonia (PP). Objective: Serotypes and antimicrobial resistance patterns in APP isolates from pigs in Korea were examined. Methods: Sixty-five APP isolates were genetically serotyped using standard and multiplex PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Antimicrobial susceptibilities were tested using the standardized disk-agar method. PCR was used to detect b-lactam, gentamicin and tetracycline-resistance genes. The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns were determined by PCR. Results: Korean pigs predominantly carried APP serotypes 1 and 5. Among 65 isolates, one isolate was sensitive to all 12 antimicrobials tested in this study. Sixty-two isolates was resistant to tetracycline and 53 isolates carried one or five genes including tet(B), tet(A), tet(H), tet(M)/tet (O), tet(C), tet(G) and/or tet(L)-1 markers. Among 64 strains, 9% and 26.6% were resistance to 10 and three or more antimicrobials, respectively. Thirteen different antimicrobial resistance patterns were observed and RAPD analysis revealed a separation of the isolates into two clusters: cluster II (6 strains resistant to 10 antimicrobials) and cluster I (the other 59 strains). Conclusion: Results show that APP serotypes 1 and 5 are the most common in Korea, and multidrug resistant strains are prevalent. RAPD analysis demonstrated that six isolates resistant to 10 antimicrobials belonged to the same cluster.

The aim of this study was to provide data on the prevalence of serovars of 48 strains of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae isolated in Japan from 2006 to 2011, and their antimicrobial resistance profiles (ARPs) by using the disc diffusion method. Of the 48 strains, 10.4% were serovar 1, 60.4% were serovar 2, 14.6% were serovar 5, and 2.1%, 2.1%, 2.1%, and 8.3% were serovars 6, 7, 12, and 15, respectively. We found that 25.0%, 12.5%, 39.6%, 37.5%, 18.8%, and 0% of the strains were resistant to penicillin G, ampicillin, oxytetracycline (OTC), sulfisoxazole, chloramphenicol, and norfloxacin, respectively. The ARPs of each serovar differed, with serovar 1 strains exhibiting multi-antimicrobial resistance to more than three antimicrobials. In contrast, 44.8% of the serovar 2 strains exhibited no resistance, and 34.5% were resistant to only one antimicrobial. All serovar 1, 5, and 15 strains were resistant to OTC, whereas serovar 2 exhibited lower resistance to OTC (6.9%). No significant increase in the prevalence of resistance to these antimicrobials was observed during the last half decade in Japan when compared with published data on the prevalence of resistant strains of A. pleuropneumoniae collected from 1989 to 2005. Regarding the prevalence of serovars, there has been a recent increase in the isolated cases of serovar 15.

SummaryPorcine pleuropneumonia, caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is one of the most important bacterial diseases of the pig respiratory tract. One hundred and forty eight Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae strains isolated from pig's clinical samples were tested for their susceptibility to 11 antimicrobials by disk diffusion method. Isolates were obtained from the pathoanatomically altered pig's lung that died with signs of respiratory disease. Antimicrobial discs with following concentration were used: ampicillin 10 µg, amoxicillin 10 µg, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 20/10 µg, cefotaxime 30 µg, gentamicin 10 µg, penicillin 10 IU, streptomycin 10 µg, tetracycline 30 µg, enrofloxacin 5 µg, lincospectin 15/200 µg, florfenicol 30 µg and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole 1.25/23.75 µg. Isolated strains showed various susceptibility to tested antimicrobials. Seventy-five percent of isolates were resistant to one or more drugs frequently used in the treatment of pig's diseases at farms in Serbia. All 148 isolates were susceptible to cefotaxime, enrofloxacin and florfenicol, while 96% of them were susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and lincospectin. Susceptibility of isolates to amoxicillin, gentamicin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole were 91%, 77% and 64%, respectively. The highest resistance rates were determined for tetracycline and streptomycin, 34% and 31%, respectively. When compared to our previous results, we noticed a decrease in resistance to tetracyclines and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Our results indicate that A. pleuropneumoniae strains isolated from pig's clinical samples in Serbia show high susceptibility to antimicrobial agents which are most often used in the pig industry.
