Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of pomegranate rind extract to ameliorate cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury

Abstract: Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent, but the therapeutic utility is limited due to its dose dependent nephrotoxicity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of pomegranate in cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury. Wistar rats were allocated into six groups as follows: the normal control, cisplatin-induced, pomegranate rind extract treatment (50, 100 and 200 mg kg(-1)) and pomegranate rind extract per se group. All the experimental test drugs/vehicle were administered orally … Show more

“…Earlier studies on punicalagin and punicalin isolated from Terminalia catappa on carrageenan‐induced paw edema assay in rats also revealed significant anti‐inflammatory activity (Lin et al, ). An in‐silico docking study on various constituents of pomegranate was conducted by us, on different pro‐inflammatory cytokines (IL‐1, IL‐6, TNF‐α) and apoptotic biomarkers (caspase‐3, Bcl‐2, Bax) and concluded that punicalagin possess lowest binding energy, thus might be responsible for anti‐inflammatory and anti‐apoptotic activities in pomegranate rind extract (Karwasra et al, ).…”

“…The administration of pomegranate rind extract significantly ameliorated increased serum creatinine and BUN, which were induced by cisplatin. In addition, pomegranate exhibited antiapoptotic activity due to the decreased activity of caspase-3 expression ( 24 ).…”
