Antioxidant, antibacterial and DNA protective activities of protein extracts from Ganoderma lucidum

Abstract: Crude proteins of cultured mycelia and fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum were investigated for antioxidant, antibacterial and DNA protective activities. It was found that the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) of the mycelia protein and fruiting bodies protein extracts against 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical (ABTS •+ ) were 2.47±0.01 and 2.77±0.11 μg protein/ml and against 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH • ) were 2.5 ±0.01 and 3.42±0.01 μg protein/ml, resp… Show more

“…The protein, Ling Zhi-8 (LZ-8), found in G. lucidum extracts was found to help T lymphocytes to respond to cytokines more effectively so as to enhance the immunomodulation effect [ 84 ]. The peptides and crude proteins isolated from G. lucidum were also demonstrated to have antioxidant effect [ 11 , 91 ]. Girjal and coworkers found that the amino acid composition of the peptide in G. lucidum was rich in phenylalanine, aspartic acid, proline, histidine, and isoleucine [ 11 ].…”

“…It was found that protein from both the mycelia and fruit body exhibited antioxidant capacity. The mycelial protein extract showed better scavenging activities than those shown by fruiting body protein extract, in terms of both 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical-and 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH•) radical-scavenging abilities (Sa-Ard et al 2015). Oxidative stress markers were measured by using the comet assay to measure ROS generation.…”

“…Literatures reveal most of the antibacterial tests are performed on crude extract with significant effective results rather than pure compounds (Sa-Ard et al 2015; Zengin et al 2015; Cilerdzic et al 2016). In addition, scanty information is available on the in vivo model test of effective compounds; we noticed only compounds ( 27 ) and 28 have been tested the in vivo model of the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected mouse (Mikolasch et al 2016).…”
