Antioxidant Effects of Eugenol on Oxidative Stress Induced by Hydrogen Peroxide in Islets of Langerhans Isolated from Male Mouse

Abstract: Background. The antioxidant system in islets of Langerhans is weak, which can lead to diabetes. Meanwhile, the main component of cloves that produce antioxidant effects is eugenol. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant effect of eugenol on oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in islets of Langerhans isolated from the male mice. Materials and Methods. In this experimental study, adult Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice (20-25 g) were prepared. The … Show more

“…This enhanced ROS has negative impact on insulin regulation signaling resulting in insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, mitochondrial dysfunction and cell dysfunction. [17][18][19] Reduction of insulin gene expression takes place due to the interaction of ROS with pancreatic cells and due to low level of antioxidant enzymes, hence results in reduction in insulin secretion. 20 One of the major therapeutic targets recently reported for type 2 DM management is to control the glucose reabsorption in intestine.…”

“…It has several biological properties (analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antipyretic), with emphasis on antioxidante 7 and anticarcinogenic action (Petrocelli et al, 2021). The antioxidant action of EUG effectively reduces oxidative stress in the pancreas (Oroojan et al, 2020), provides neuroprotection in Alzheimer disease (Amir Rawa et al, 2022), protects rat liver tissue by strengthening antioxidant response (Niazi et al, 2021) and reduces oxidative stress induced by arsenic trioxide (Binu et al, 2018) .…”
