Application of Capillary Electrophoresis with Laser-induced Fluorescence Detection for the Determination of Trace Neodymium in Spent Nuclear Fuel Using Complexation with an Emissive Macrocyclic Polyaminocarboxylate Probe

Abstract: A simple and rapid method with low radiation exposure risk was developed for the determination of neodymium in spent nuclear fuel by capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection using a fluorescent probe having a macrocyclic hexadentate polyaminocarboxylate structure. The concentration of Nd(III) in a spent nuclear fuel sample was determined with no interference from various matrix elements, including lanthanides and uranium (at a 200-fold excess), with 92 ± 3% recovery. This is due to h… Show more

“…Fluorescein and FITC were purchased from Dojindo (Kumamoto, Japan). FTC-ABNOTA was synthesized by Dojindo according to a previously reported method [33] and purified using HPLC (92.9% purity). FTC-PDA was synthesized by Sapala Organics (Hyderabad, India) according to a previously reported method [35] and purified using HPLC (97.9% purity).…”

“…We previously developed several fluorescent probes for the selective CE-LIF detection [29][30][31][32] of ultratrace Nd 3+ [33,34] and UO 2 2+ ions [35]. Some of these probes were synthesized by a chemical supplier using the protocol given in our previous papers [33,35] and were further purified using chromatographic techniques (Section 2). However, CE-LIF detection is often impeded by interferences caused by impurities.…”

“…The pKa,Ln-ABNOTA value obtained for Tb 3+ , 9.65 ± 0.07, is similar to those determined by other methods, 9.44 ± 0.07 (CE) and 9.4 ± 0.2 (fluorometry). 37 While it was expected that the side-chain, such as an aminobenzyl group, would show no effect on the pKa of the acid-dissociation reaction of the coordinated water molecule in the Ln-NOTA structure, the pKa values for Ln-FTC-ABNOTA complexes (where FTC represents fluorescein-thiocarbamyl) were determined to be 10.1 ± 0.1, 9.8 ± 0.2, 8.7 ± 0.2 for Nd, Gd and Lu, 39 respectively, which are comparable to those of Ln-ABNOTA complexes in this study (for example, 8.92 for the Lu-ABNOTA complex). As such, the estimation that the pKa values of Ln-NOTA complexes are very similar to those of Ln-ABNOTA complexes is reasonable, providing estimated KNeu5Ac-Ln-NOTA values, as summarized in Table 1.…”

“…Nd is always detected using MS and radiometric methods, which inevitably require time‐consuming pretreatment as well as chemical separation procedures. Recently, an interesting method based on CE coupled with traditional laser‐induced fluorescence (LIF) detection has been proposed for the direct determination of Nd . In this study, by using Nd as a model fission product, the potential application of the in‐column fiber‐optic laser‐induced fluorescence‐capillary electrophoresis (ICFO‐LIF‐CE) system in the field of radioanalytical chemistry is explored for the first time.…”
