Application of high frequency color Doppler ultrasound in the monitoring of rheumatoid arthritis treatment

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to explore the use of high frequency color Doppler ultrasound to measure synovial thickness and blood flow to assess the therapeutic value of the recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (TNF) II receptor antibody fusion protein in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. A total of 36 clinically-diagnosed patients with RA were treated with methotrexate tablets or the recombinant TNF-receptor antibody fusion protein for 24 weeks. Joint synovial thickness and synovial blood flow inte… Show more

“…RA is a symmetrical, chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting multiple small peripheral joints, with possible extra-articular systemic damage (14). RA patients may suffer from pain, numbness, weight gain, difficulty in joint flexion and extension, joint swelling and a burning sensation in the muscles, bones and joints (15).…”

“…In a previous study, Zheng et al (11) confirmed that US examination was feasible and capable of predicting RA disease, as measured by the disease activity score in 28 joints for the evaluation of joints. Furthermore, McQueen et al (12) have previously indicated that US is able to detect bone erosion with 95% specificity and 78% predictive accuracy, with a bone volume loss of >20% in US-accessible areas, such as in the dorsal and palmar aspects of MCP joints.…”
