Applications of augmented reality in ophthalmology [Invited]

Abstract: Throughout the last decade, augmented reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) have gradually become a substantial part of modern life, with increasing applications ranging from gaming and driver assistance to medical training. Owing to the tremendous progress in miniaturized displays, cameras, and sensors, HMDs are now used for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of several eye diseases. In this review, we discuss the current state-of-the-art as well as potential uses of AR in ophthalmology. This review … Show more

“…In addition to the three areas summarized in this article, AR also has potential in diagnosing and protection. There have been some researches well-developed on VR but lack exploring in AR in the diagnosis of strabismus (73). It might be possible to achieve better effectiveness by implementing well-developed diagnosis applications from VR to AR since AR is based on natural vision and can be used for a long time (9).…”

“…To support this AR app, the android device must have a compass (magnetometer), a rear-facing camera, a gyroscope, a global positioning system (GPS), and an accelerometer. [ 6 ] These devices need to run Android 7.0 Nougat or later, and need to be installed with Google Play services for AR. In this era, there is no dearth of smartphone users.…”
