Artificial spawning of African catfish Heterobranchus longifilis: differences between the effects on reproduction in females treated with carp pituitary homogenate or Ovopel

Abstract: The e¡ects of the controlled reproduction of African cat¢sh Heterobranchus longi¢lis after ovulation stimulation with carp pituitary homogenate (CPH; 4 mg kg À1 ; group I) or Ovopel (1/511pellet kg À1 ; group II) were investigated. After the application of Ovopel, eggs were obtained from a higher percentage of females than after a CPH treatment (87.5% and 75.0% respectively). The statistically signi¢cant (P 0.05) e¡ect of ovulation stimulator was speci¢ed only in the case of the weight of eggs (expressed in gr… Show more

“…The reproduction of many fish species in hatcheries is impossible without the application of hormonal preparations. This refers to spawners originating from wild fish populations (Kucharczyk et al, 1997 andSzabo et al, 2002), as well as from those reared pond conditions (Brzuska andAdamek, 2008 andMousa, 2010). Most marine fish eggs are pelagic (Blaxter, 1969), but in salinities below a certain threshold, these eggs sink.…”
